WHAT WE DO

While there is a broad range of Arabic language media outlets reporting stories from and about the Middle East, there is currently no affordable and reliable means for English speakers to gain access to this content. As a result, many English speaking businesspersons, students, journalists and others who have an interest in the affairs of the region are largely unaware of what the Middle East media is covering and how they are covering these stories.

Mideastwire.com aims to close this gap by offering a daily menu of translations covering some of the key political, cultural, economic and opinion pieces appearing in the media of the 22 Arab countries and the Arab Diaspora. Through this effort, we hope to address at least one aspect of a global disconnect that continues to threaten a wide spectrum of socio-political and economic relationships, both here in the region and beyond.

It is also important to note that, since our founding in 2005, Mideastwire.com is wholly funded by the content license fees paid by individuals and organizations. As such, there is no government, commercial or non-profit support, an aspect that we believe provides a relatively independent platform for better understanding.

Indeed, less than 24 hours after the statement by the Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Samer al-Manfi, who was visiting Rabat and who stressed the role of the Moroccan Kingdom as an active and influential state in the Arab Maghreb Union, Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, received a message on Wednesday from Al-Manfi regarding the activation of the Arab Maghreb Union and the enhancement of cooperation between the two countries… (Read More)

On April 25, the Saudi-owned London-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper carried the following report from Baghdad by its correspondent Fadel an-Nishmi: “It is clear that the Parliament speaker’s post, which political customs in Iraq assigned to the Sunni component, is no longer bound by this component’s parties and powers’ selection of a figure they deem suitable to occupy it. Moreover, the most influential and representative Sunni bloc in Parliament is no longer monopolizing that post, seeing as how the Progress Party led by ousted Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi is unable to get it despite its numerical superiority in Parliament over the remaining Sunni blocs… Hence, circles close to the Progress Party and Al-Halbousi did not exclude their full withdrawal from the political process… (Read More)

The Shi’i politician told Asharq al-Awsat at this level: “Reducing the Iranian military presence in Syria is a measure directed toward American President Joe Biden in particular, to give him a victory in form in the region due to Iran’s wish not to see Trump or any hardline Republican win the American presidential elections.” According to the Iraqi politician, the last few months witnessed an unusual intensification of the mutual messages between Washington and Tehran, some of which happened directly and in the rare presence of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian… (Read More)
