WHAT WE DO

While there is a broad range of Arabic language media outlets reporting stories from and about the Middle East, there is currently no affordable and reliable means for English speakers to gain access to this content. As a result, many English speaking businesspersons, students, journalists and others who have an interest in the affairs of the region are largely unaware of what the Middle East media is covering and how they are covering these stories.

Mideastwire.com aims to close this gap by offering a daily menu of translations covering some of the key political, cultural, economic and opinion pieces appearing in the media of the 22 Arab countries and the Arab Diaspora. Through this effort, we hope to address at least one aspect of a global disconnect that continues to threaten a wide spectrum of socio-political and economic relationships, both here in the region and beyond.

It is also important to note that, since our founding in 2005, Mideastwire.com is wholly funded by the content license fees paid by individuals and organizations. As such, there is no government, commercial or non-profit support, an aspect that we believe provides a relatively independent platform for better understanding.

On May 1, the Saudi-owned London-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper carried the following report from Baghdad by its correspondent Hamza Mustapha: “A heated dispute erupted between the Iraqi parties after Parliament announced its intention to issue a law turning “Eid al-Ghadir” into an official holiday, at a time when Sunni powers warned against “a vicious circle of actions and reactions.” The draft law was placed on Parliament’s agenda for (yesterday’s) Tuesday session. But its preliminary reading was halted by a controversy that broke out between Shi’i and Sunni deputies surrounding the inclusion of the draft on the agenda without consultations, at a time when acting Parliament Speaker Mohsen al-Mandalawi announced earlier that “the agenda of the next session will feature the preliminary reading of the “Eid al-Ghadir” holiday law… (Read More)

Attiyeh is one of the most prominent supporters of the resistance in Jordan and has repeatedly condemned the Zionist entity, urging his country’s government to do justice to the resistance, and establish official relations and contacts with it… (Read More)

Tehran might benefit the most from this rapprochement…, in light of its economic crisis that resulted from the comprehensive and harsh American sanctions imposed on the country since 2018, which remained a key obstacle facing Iran’s strengthening of its economic ties with the states of the world due to these countries’ fear of being affected by the American sanctions if they were to economically deal with Iran… (Read More)
