"The purity of the territorial waters" |
| On February 4, the pro-parliamentary daily Al-Akhbar carried the following opinion piece by Khaled Saghieh: "Many people in Lebanon have been restless ever since the Ethiopian plane crashed. Some have buried their loved ones, and some are still waiting for them, and some are laying awake day and night waiting to find the plane's body, and black box and to extract the passengers' bodies. However, some Lebanese are restless for different reasons. Currently, and as these words are being written, bodies of the Ethiopian nationality are laying in the Lebanese territorial waters. Of course, these bodies are being looked for in the same way that the Lebanese bodies are; or actually, they are being looked for because search for the Lebanese bodies is already ongoing. The question however remains: How can we allow them [the Ethiopian bodies] to remain here all this time? How can we allow them to taint the purity of our territorial waters? "The matter is not only confined to the days that went by. The seriousness of the matter will increase when the Ethiopian [bodies] will be found. Indeed, the majority will probably turn out not to have residency permits. Here, the dilemma of accepting the Ethiopian bodies - in the morgue of the governmental hospital until somebody comes to pick them up - will be raised. Simply, this represents a threat to national security. The tragedy does not stop at this point. What if the cost for transferring a certain body to Ethiopia is not paid? "Let's be clear from the start so that to avoid any wandering of the thoughts: Burying Ethiopians in the country of the cedars is out of the question. At the same time, the bodies cannot be placed in underground prisons similarly to what takes place for dozens of living refugees. The Lebanese, [specifically] those who are keen on the prevalence of security and the purity of the race, will have to look for other solutions. These solutions won't be hard [to find] as long as the human rights of the Ethiopian prisoners and free individuals are not respected in Lebanon to start with, so the rights of the victims [will also not be respected]. "But let us not complicate things and let us take this matter step by step. Because taking all necessary precautions is a duty, let's please have separate morgues for the Ethiopian and Lebanese bodies starting from this moment so that no confusion occurs later. Death might be able to implement some of the ethnic tolerance rules and to overcome the issue of residency permits. A dead Ethiopian is a good Ethiopian." - Al-Akhbar Lebanon, Lebanon |
